Spotlight: FinCEN Highlights Growing Risks Tied to Hospice and Healthcare Fraud

Snapshot:

On August 19, 2026, FinCEN announced that it convened financial institutions and law enforcement to discuss emerging healthcare benefits fraud schemes, including the exploitation of hospice care services. Participants reviewed evolving fraud typologies, associated financial red flags, and ways to leverage Bank Secrecy Act data to identify and disrupt these schemes.

Why it Matters:

Healthcare fraud involving Medicare and Medicaid programs continues to grow in scale and complexity, creating significant challenges for financial institutions. FinCEN’s focus on hospice fraud serves as a reminder for BSA/AML teams to remain alert to suspicious payment patterns, healthcare-related fraud risks, and opportunities to strengthen monitoring and SAR reporting efforts. FinCEN also encourages financial institutions reporting this activity to reference this Advisory in SAR Field 2 (Filing Institution Note to FinCEN) and include the key term “HCF-2026-A001” in the narrative to help support law enforcement analysis.
